Marianne Wilson

“I paint in watercolour (my favourite), gouache or oil and also do lino printing.  I prefer to draw inspiration from real life, and I am so grateful to be living in this amazing suburb, surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna. My artwork has been printed – all locally in Brisbane – onto various items such as tea-towels, cushions, tote bags, tablecloths and furniture-covering fabrics. I enjoy working on specific artwork commissions, e.g. for paintings to commemorate births, anniversaries and weddings.”

We asked Marianne:
"Tell us something about your background..."

I grew up in South Africa and have lived in several other countries since, including the UK and Malaysia, before moving to Australia.

I trained originally as a textile designer and worked for a cotton mill near Cape Town. My designs were hand drawn on paper and painted in gouache for fashion and home textile markets. While I was at the mill, I created all the designs for an interior shop called The Biggie Best Shop.

After moving to the UK, I did freelance artwork for calendars, coffee mugs, fabrics, greeting cards, packaging, placemats and wallpaper for several companies including Pimpernel, Waverley Cotton Mill USA. Other work included painting commissions for conference centres, golf clubs and hotels.
